As the Managing Director, Jamshed J. Irani has led the change for the last seven years. When he retires in 2001, who will succeed Irani at the helm? This issue is being hotly debated in the steel town of Jamshedpur. The steel man has decided against nominating his successor and might leave it to the board. BT looks at the possible contenders for the top post. Firdose Vandrevala or FAV, 45 is Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) and a Tisco veteran. An IIT (Kharagpur) graduate, he rose through the ranks to become the youngest Vice-President in 1994. Articulate and sharp, FAV is perceived as a strategy-maker and less of a `shopfloor' man. Triddibesh Mukherjee or Doc T., 55, Vice-President (Operations), has been largely credited with Tata Steel's success in keeping production costs low. A leading metallurgist, he did his doctorate from Sheffield, UK, from where Dr Irani too earned his PhD. A close associate of Irani, he is known for his cool temper and genial personality. B. Muthuraman, 55, Vice-President (Cold Rolling Mill), is the key man, as the success or failure of CRM could determine Tata Steel's future. An unassuming person, Mutharaman is a brilliant strategist and one of Irani's trusted lieutenants. |
