One
of the most critical challenges faced by leaders today is that of
spotting the real opportunities for their organisations from a wide
array of possibilities. They need to define strategies and create
organisational cultures that promote employee-commitment, partnership
with customers, and create a value-based financial management system.
Employees are the most sustainable competitive
asset for businesses, especially in knowledge intensive industries.
The leader should develop a culture of personal commitment-a culture
that aligns the individual interests of employees with those of
the organisation and its customers. This is accomplished by developing
clearly defined performance evaluation and reward systems that are
aligned with an organisation's vision, mission, and values.
The leader should be able to re-define the
role of his key customers. Partnership with customers is not merely
about putting them first or finding a solution to a problem, but
about building a long-standing relationship by going beyond the
established parameters. The leader should foster consciously a culture
of "partnership with customers" among the employees. Every
process in the organisation should be oriented towards ensuring
customer satisfaction.
Another key leadership differentiator is a
system of value-based financial management that ensures short-term
success without sacrificing future growth and competitiveness. Measures
like cost-cutting-a short-term measure for critical times-should
be done without hurting the long-term goals of the company.
A true leader will see every volatile and chaotic
situation as an opportunity to reinvent himself and make a breakthrough.
