Leading By Delegation

Leadership is about empowering people. It is about sacrifice and setting an example. It is about helping people discover their hidden talents. The four qualities that a leader must possess are-a clear vision, an understanding of the current reality, courage to make moves that will help transform the current realities into the targeted goal and high ethical standards.

Leadership is all about attitude. The first principle of leadership is to practice what you preach. A leader must understand that leadership is about action, not about position. Leadership is a continuous process. A good leader does not make choices or decisions on behalf of his team. He helps the team by expanding its horizon of freedom so that team members can make responsible choices.

Love and respect do not automatically accompany a position of leadership. These must be earned. A good leader is one who picks the right men and empowers them to make their own decisions without much interference from his side. Great leadership is a mixture of intelligence, trustworthiness, humaneness, courage and sternness. The team must have a say in what and where it is being led to. A leader who neglects this fact will soon be without his team-men follow only if they choose to.

Leaders are a small tribe, but those who belong to it must be excellent followers as well. A leader must realise that his or her role must be that of an enabler, not of an enforcer. Good leaders are those who diligently recruit, train, delegate, motivate, manage, assist, and reward team members so that they can accomplish the goals of the company. Leadership is the wise use of power, and power is the capacity to translate intention into reality and sustain it.
