The 800 Rolls On
For a product dismissed for being too 'underpowered' to stick it out in the competitive era, the A-segment Maruti 800 is doing remarkably well. Yes, for a while it did look as though it would be the moped of four-wheelers, with B-segment cars assuming the 'minimum requirement' tag. But the 800 is the 800. It still sells.

Sight & Sound
For those endowed with a fat wallet, there's enough available in the markets to make cinema halls redundant. Here's a guide to some of the best home theatre systems.

Contains a 5-disc MusicBank DVD/CD changer with Dolby Digital and DTS. The 5-channel speaker system with two dual active subwoofers and an intelligent LCD touch-panel remote control make for the perfect home-theatre experience. With Nakamichi's sleek design you can arrange the system to stand on the floor, place it on a shelf, even mount it on the wall.
Price: Rs 3,86,000
Optional 42-inch plasma monitor: Rs 6,50,000

ONKYO
The package includes a DVD player with progressive scanning-compatible with a projector, a 6.1-channel Dolby Digital surround receiver and six speakers. Onkyo may not appeal to the aesthete in you but very few audio equipment makers can match the amplifiers and speakers from this low-decibel Japanese player.
Price: Rs 1,34,400 (excluding TV)

SONY
Even if it isn't as breathtaking as the others, the good thing about Sony's home theatre system is that it doesn't leave a hole in your pocket. Sony's Digital Reality TVs are great. There is also the option of the 3-inch thick plasma monitor that can be hung up on the wall.
Price: Rs 39,000
Optional DVD: Rs 16,000
Optional plasma monitor: Rs 5,90,000

BOSE-LIFESTYLE 50
When it comes to aesthetics, Bose's flagship home theatre system is streets ahead of the rest. The only visible pieces of equipment are a palm-sized personal music centre, and five tiny Jewel Cube speakers. The remote works on radio frequency and can be operated from any room in the house. Bose, however, doesn't offer monitors and the system doesn't have DTS. Instead it uses its patented Acoustimass technology.
Price: Rs 2,09,900 plus taxes. Available only in Delhi and Mumbai

JAMO & DENON
Jamo is known for its great speaker technology and offers you a variety of speakers depending on the kind of music you prefer. The speakers can be combined with Denon electronics and a Barco projector to complete the home theatre experience. Caveat: make sure your pad is big enough. This combo can bring the roof down.
Price: Rs 3,00,000
DVD player: Rs 29,800
Optional projector: Rs 5,44,000
